It has an ancient history, the “violet Ramacchese” the high quality of artichoke that has been cultivated for centuries in Catania Ramacca campaigns and that will be the star of the festival. A story that has its roots in the past of Sicily, when this precious fruit of nature was known for its aphrodisiac qualities and could not miss on the finest tables. A story that for 24 years returns to animate the “land of strangers” – as it is called Ramacca for the hospitality of its inhabitants – and not simply be a gastronomic event for gourmets, but is able to project visitors into a world welcoming and familiar, in a dimension in which to rediscover the ancient traditions of a rural culture remained intact in the flavors, colors and smells.

Curious crossroads of dialects, customs and traditions from all parts of Sicily, Ramacca encloses in its own kitchen and own customs all those cultures and traditions that have gradually gone arriving in the country over the centuries. And so, along with the culinary delicacies that will transform the city center into a kind of gastronomic showcase, they are planned moments that will elevate the culture, traditions and craft and artistic skills of the territory.

But the star will remain, as always, “the violet Ramacchese”, superb quality artichoke known throughout Italy for its organoleptic and therapeutic properties. A table will be proposed paccheri with artichokes and smoked cheese, the mezze penne with artichoke cream and bacon, home-made with artichoke hearts and parmesan cheese or the risotto of artichoke cream and yellow squash. Visitors curious, also, in addition to taste delicious dishes artichoke can also learn more about its nutritional and healthful qualities: for several years, this event has crossed the boundaries of the province of Catania and by organizing exhibitions and conferences will address all issues related to the cultivation of artichokes in Sicily. At the same time, the festival will offer a great showcase to all local products, from blood orange oil, from cheese to honey to wine, in addition to the fine local bread.

Performances and folk and musical performances will be the background to all the days, while for culture lovers are scheduled guided visit to the Civic Museum, the Museum of Musical Bands, the Archaeological Park which contains the remains of a prehistoric village and the ruins of a Sicilian center-greek and the Church of St. Joseph, with adjoining the former Capuchin monastery, which houses a relic of Padre Pio. In Ramacca, whose name derives from the Arabic for some Rammuallah (land or garden of Allah) or Ramaq (observatory) or Rammak (mares guardian), worth visiting the Mother Church, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, with the civic clock that stands above the square tower of the bell tower. The Artichoke Festival of Ramacca is short, history, culture, folklore and of course good food: those who decide to go this far in the first weekend in April certainly will not be disappointed.
